News bites: Ottowa paper's 10-best gay destination list omits Whistler WinterPride. Shame on them.

The Ottowa Citizen's Daniel Drolet, who made it to one place on the list in 2007, picks the "10 best gay destinations for 2008" in today's issue of the paper.

His choices: Copenhagen; Manchester, England ("...increasingly on the GLBT traveller's gaydar. Their pride festival (Aug. 15 to 25 in 2008) is one of the biggest of its kind in Britain"); Spain (You can get married there "and the weather is a lot warmer"); Buenos Aires; Guerrilla Gay Fare ("On the second Friday of every month, hundreds of gays, lesbians and friends descend on an unsuspecting straight bar and take it over for the night. This secret operation is co-ordinated through Facebook -- you've got to be in the know to be a part of it -- and operates in cities all over, including Ottawa."); An Atlantis cruise; Black and Blue, Montreal; The Gazebo Inn ("This 10-room establishment in an old farmhouse near Ogunquit, Maine recently won kudos from OutTraveler.com. Gay-owned and dog-friendly, it attracts a mix of gay, straight and furry clients."); Palm Springs; Utah Gay and Lesbian Ski Week.

It's that tenth item that surprises us. This list came to us via Canada.com, after all. We have nothing against the Wasatch Range. We've even found a stark majesty to those bare desert mountains on various trips through them. But this is a list for Canada.com. Surely, Mr Drolet could have picked another place where -- as he says of the Utah event -- "Gays and lesbians do more than bar-hop."

What about Whistler's WinterPride? His readers, after all, could get there without a passport. Our local readers should have a passport, but can get there even quicker. Be sure, though, to get your tickets quickly. The Winter fun starts Feb. 3 and continues through Feb. 10.

The talent lineup for 2008: DJ David Knapp headlines Snowball. DJ John Millier spins the MountainTOP. Cirque Du Soleil returns to the WinterPRIDE Banquet.  Last Comic Standing's Debra DiGiovanni performs at Comedy Night. Melissa Ferrick takes the stage at the first Women's Night of Music. CURVE Magazine columnists Lipstick & Dipstick (Gina Daggett and Kathy Belge) kick off a premier Women's Evening Event!

As BillW points out at GaySeattle.blogspot, the festival's women's programs have been significantly expanded this year.
