LaBarbara displayed this pic of Chelsea Clinton at the tres gay Red Dress party from Willamette Week, apparently to shock his readers. After all, his readers might not realize that they could do
that with plastic.
The single-issue anti-gay activist Peter LaBarbara is notorious for over-the-top reactions to anything gay. Those who have the good fortune of not recognizing the name might (if you dare) check out the
great coverage of his rants from the
wonderful Good As You (G.A.Y.) blog.
Suffice it to say, however, that LaBarbara seems to have a hair-trigger rant-switch, which makes him an effective (or at least well-read) activist for his cause. The latest item to flip the switch is a gay party last week in Portland where former first-daughter Chelsea Clinton made a brief appearance while campaigning for her mother.
The visit rated a brief item in Willamette Week which was, in turn, picked up by us and many other gay blogs.
On his website, which he calls "Americans for Truth" LaBarbara uses the WWeek brief as the impetus for a lengthy screed.
Example:
According to this article in the Willamette Week, the Red Dress Party “started years ago as a way for gay guys to wear girlie gowns and get stinkin’ drunk.” Like they needed an excuse. Why is it so easy to get homosexual guys in a dress anyway? Could it be because they are confused about their God-given masculinity to begin with? Sorry, my digression has taken me into overlapping phobias: I don’t know which I’m more guilty of: homo- or trans-phobia? (Both, you Bible Bigot! I’m reporting you to the Thought Police.)
It goes on and on (as LaBarbara is wont to do) in that vein.
He posted this rant before the lengthier press accounts of Chelsea's visit along with Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell of several Philadelphia gay bars.
We suspect that this sentence about their visit to Woody's from the Washington Post's blog-story on the club crawl might be enough to get him worked up again: "After being introduced by Rendell, Clinton gave a brief speech to the mostly male crowd, which briefly stopped dancing and checking out the dancers standing on tables (and wearing only briefs) to listen to her."
But maybe his rant switch will be flipped, instead, by MSNBC's report that mentions a woman who proudly claimed, "I grabbed her ass" after posing for a snapshot with Chelsea.
