The company's original 1970s logo, featuring a siren with uncovered breasts is now used only at the first Starbucks store on Pike Place. It will come to all stores on packaging for "Pike Place Blend" to be introduced in mid-April. Representatives...

Wonder what the inside story is about the nation-wide three-hour shutdown of all Starbucks stores? Well there's one right-wing loon out there who thinks he has the answer: A "James Hartline" of San Diego says he started a boycott of the Seattle-based coffee company three years ago because it is a sponsor of San Diego's gay pride events. It is clear that Starbucks is feeling the effect of our boycott. Over the last three years, thousands of Christians and their churches have joined the James Hartline Report Action Center in boycotting Starbucks. Do boycotts work? Absolutely, they...

Whatever one might think of the group's real-politik approach to LGBT activism, one has to admit that the Human Rights Campaign is pre-eminent among LGBT activist groups in using the press release to maximum advantage. They've shown their mastery of the flak art once again by releasing yet another rebranding of their annual "Equality Index" survey. The survey is a major undertaking, for which the group deserves praise. And HRC has never been shy about generating praise for itself, as it demonstrates with its flurry of press releases touting the release of a list what they call...

Ann Levinson, one of four women -- all GSBA members -- bidding to buy the Storm WNBA franchise got a rousing welcome today from the gay business group seaQwa photo: Robin Evans The stars of today's GSBA luncheon were to have been the three powerhouse legislators who arrived to talk about the upcoming session. [see previous Qblog post ] And they eventually got their warm ovations, but before they were introduced, GSBA president Louise Chernin introduced the women of the hour, long-time GSBA member Anne Levinson who is set to become one of four co-owners of the Seattle Storm. The PI introduces...

A series of related stories will sometimes cross the web-wires that we watch for Qnews without any obvious tie-in -- no book tour on the subject, no national news item to provide a hook for the local stories. So it was last weekend when at least three daily papers ran stories about apparently unrelated local events, but with a common theme: gay neighborhoods that flowered in the 70s or 80s are now withering. In Dallas, the Morning News recorded the likely passing at the end of the year of a gay bookstore in the city's Crossroads neighborhood. Opened as a junk store on Dec. 5, 1980, Crossroads...

In a column called "Alaska Ear" in Anchorage Daily News , there's this item about the complaints lodged in some right-wing media about a special Alaska Airlines discount offered on a web page targeted to LGBT travelers: Did you get one of those e-mail screeches from some anti-gay group about a 10 percent discount on Alaska Airlines fares to NYC during the holiday season? It's available to everyone, but the airline did some target marketing to gays that set talk radio on fire Outside. Claims that you have to tell the airline you're gay to get the discount would be funny if...

A special promotion by Seattle-based Alaska Air has at least one guy up in arms. The promotion currently offers a 10% discount for Holiday travel on the airline's relatively new route (since 2002) to New York from its traditional West Coast base. [ hattip for this story : GaySeattle.blogspot.com which blogged about it two days ago .] The problem, at least for one Idaho man, is that the promotion was targeted at a specific group -- gay men and lesbians. Bryan Fischer, who claims to speak for a group called Idaho Values Alliance . In a posting in which he quotes himself extensively on the right...

At Slog, Savage suggests that the space about to be vacated by the not-lamented Sugar might present a good location for the about to be evicted Pony -- which was, after all, created in the very short-term in that space that will be torn down. But, as often happens on Slog, the comments are as interesting as the original post. After a few bar history comments that miss the history of the nabe's gay spaces, "Daddy Jeff" offers this great bit of history reminding us that Savage's suggestion would take us forward into the past: Here is some the back story on the Sugar space. The guys...

Those responding in a new survey of LGBT consumers insisted that sexy ads images like these are less effective than "pride" or "cuddly" images Are you a "super gay"? Maybe a "habitater" or part of the "gay mainstream"? Then again, a few of you are probably among the "party people" or even among the "closeted". Those are the categories that a marketing research company came up with as shorthand to describe the population of all of us, based on -- well... "926 online and intercept surveys." New American Dimensions conducted...
