In a (rare) email to their list, the Seattle LGBT Community Center insists that they're not only still around, but planning for several upcoming upcoming services and events, including a QueerFest at Volunteer Park on Pride weekend. (A volunteer request for "march monitors" suggests that they're also planning to host a Pride march on Broadway. That's not explicit, however.) The year's theme is of this year's QueerFest is "Green with Pride". [And, hey, at least they deserve credit for avoiding what was surely a temptation to use the overdone word "Change"...

It's a situation that I, unfortunately, understand only too well : Being forced to move out of a place all-too-quickly when it's all-too full of stuff . The LGBT Center at 1115 E. Pike St. [ get directions ] is in that situation right now. They must abandon their offices by Monday, Jan. 14. Since they don't yet have a new location and don't really have the money to pay for temporary storage, they must get rid of all the stuff they've collected in their several years at the central Pike St. location. They'll do that tomorrow ( Jan. 12 ) at an open house from noon to 5 pm...

In its lede to today's story on the Center's Pride-related financial crisis, the Seattle Times calls the Seattle LGBT Center , "[a] Capitol Hill institution important to Seattle's lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual community." That overstates the organization's importance. Not only is the Center of such recent vintage that it hasn't had time to become an "institution", but if the Center closes or moves, it's doubtful that the event would be noticed by the majority of gay men or lesbians in Seattle. But the Center is, nonetheless, important to us all...

The LGBT Community Center and Ingersoll Gender Center host a potluck this evening ( Wednesday, Nov. 21 ) at 6pm at the center [ get directions ]. Bring along a dish to share and a friend or two. The hosts promise "a wonderful homemade holiday meal" and "support and understanding of other LGBTQ people." You'll also have a chance to test your Thanksgiving wishbone luck with a raffle featuring items and gift certificates from local businesses.
