Police in Michigan say racist, anti-gay, anti-Semitic graffiti 'not hate crime'

Mason, Mich. -- Mason police are treating racist, anti-gay and anti-Semitic graffiti discovered this weekend on the Columbia Road bridge over US-127 as "an episode of vandalism," Police Chief John Stressman said.
"We're not looking at it as a hate crime or gang crime," he added, saying none of the graffiti -- which includes the N-word, anti-gay slurs, swastikas and other vulgarities -- appeared to be gang related.
From what police have been able to tell, he said, the perpetrators were "maybe even kids, out there drinking beer, leaving their cans around, being obscene and destructive."
