London police investigate 'unexplained' death of popular gay radio DJ, Kevin Greening

A man has been arrested following the death of popular British radio DJ Kevin Greening.

The man, in his 50s, was held at the address in Wandsworth, south London, where Greening's body was found at the weekend.

He has been questioned on suspicion of possessing and intending to supply Class A drugs, and has been bailed until March.

Greening's death was initially confirmed by his agent Chris North who said his client died "peacefully" in his sleep on Saturday, but gave no further details.

Broadcasters paid tribute to Greening, an openly gay broadcaster, who leaves behind a long-term boyfriend whom he often referred to on air as his “lesbian life-partner”.

A veteran of several radio stations, for the past two years Greening presented weekday and Saturday afternoon shows for Smooth FM, which is owned by the Guardian Media Group (GMG). John Myers, chief executive of GMG Radio, said: “He was passionate about radio and all kinds of music and will be sadly missed, not only by his colleagues at Smooth but by millions of listeners. It’s a terrible loss.”

He became renowned for his tongue-in-cheek style and introduced comedy sketches to his programmes through a series of fictional characters, including a hapless DJ called Raymond Sinclair.

His career included stints at the BBC World Service, Radio 5 Live, Jazz FM and the indie rock station Xfm.

Simon Mayo, the Radio 5 Live presenter, who worked with Greening at Radio 1, said: “Anyone who listened to his programmes could tell he was extremely bright, extremely clever. He had a very dry sense of humour and was quite shy really, sometimes embarrassed about having achieved the level of fame that he did.”

The case is being treated as an "unexplained" death and detectives from the force's specialist crime directorate are involved in trying to establish what happened, the BBC reports.

A postmortem examination conducted at St George's hospital yesterday was inconclusive, prompting police investigators to classify Greening's death as "unexplained".

The inquiry into the death has been handed to detectives at the Specialist Crime Directorate at Sutton, a unit normally charged with investigating the capital's most high profile and serious cases and is sometimes described as the 'Murder Squad' by the media.. The transfer is not, however, an indication that a murder inquiry is under way, according to a Metropolitan police spokesman.

The arrest has raised questions over Greening's final hours. "A man was arrested at the scene in connection with the death and has subsequently been bailed on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs, pending further inquiries," the police spokesman added.
