Gay BBC radio host cleared of rape charges

Source: Press Association and BBC News
BBC Radio 4 presenter Nigel Wrench was cleared of raping a man he met at a New Year party.

Mr Wrench, 47, was accused of forcing the younger man to perform a sex act on him in January last year.

The presenter on Radio 4's PM programme bowed his head and sighed when the verdict was delivered at the Old Bailey.

He had admitted snorting cocaine with the man at a party in Kennington, south London, before inviting him home and showing him his art collection.

The alleged victim, now a 27-year-old PA, told the jury he blacked out after taking a gulp of champagne Wrench had given him.

He claimed he woke later that day to find himself being punched about the head and forced to perform a sex act.

But Mr Wrench said the pair had engaged in "boisterous horseplay" and consensual sex, which the other man seemed to enjoy.

Sarah Forshaw, defending Wrench, told jurors they may have found some of what they heard "thoroughly unpleasant" and "deeply unattractive" but urged them to put aside any feelings of "repugnance" about the case.

The barrister urged jurors to assess the case on facts and put aside any "moral indignation" of what they had heard during the trial.

The jury was earlier ordered to return not guilty verdicts on charges of sexual assault and supplying the drug Temazepam with intention to engage in sexual activity.

Judge Michael Shamrock said there was insufficient evidence for a conviction on those counts.
