Australian lesbian lovers get life terms for sadistic murder

Source: Reuters, News.com.au, BBC News
Two lesbian lovers, one who drank blood as part of a vampire culture, were sentenced to life in prison on Friday for what an Australian judge said was the "evil" killing of a girl they bludgeoned to death before dumping her body in a wheelie bin.

Jessica Ellen Stasinowsky, 21, and her girlfriend Valerie Paige Parashumti, 19, were sentenced in the West Australian Supreme Court after pleading guilty to Stacey's wilful murder at a Perth house in December 2006. They were each handed a strict security life sentence, with a minimum of 24 years in jail.

The pair bludgeoned 16-year-old British citizen Stacey Mitchell with a concrete block, strangled her with a chain and then videoed her blood-splattered bedroom and semi-naked body.

Judge Peter Blaxell said the murder was "sexually perverse" and "evil", after the court was told the two lesbian lovers became sexually aroused as they battered the teenage girl and then kissed while standing over her body as she lay dying.

He ordered they be held under strict security without contact with each other as they shared the same "perverse outlook on life".

"You have each had more than a year in custody to reflect upon the evilness of your crime, yet you still lack remorse and obviously place no value on the sanctity of human life," Blaxell said in handing down the life sentences.

"There is also the added problem that you each enjoy being sexually aroused by the infliction of violence," he said.

When Stacey moved into a house the lovers were sharing, Stasinowsky immediately hated her because she thought the teenager was flirting with her lover, the court heard.

During sentencing submissions in January, prosecutor David Dempster told the court Parashumti and Stasinowsky had killed Stacey, who they had known for three days, because she had been annoying them.

Parashumti's lawyer, David Edwardson, QC, said his client was partly motivated by a desire to dispel Stasinowsky's jealousy about Stacey, who had walked around the house dressed only in a bikini.

The girls attacked Stacey at their home after giving her alcohol containing a sleeping pill.

Parashumti repeatedly bashed Stacey on the head with a concrete block as the teenager tried to flee.

Because Stacey was taking a long time to die, Stasinowksy then wrapped a belt chain around her neck. Stasinowsky later told a prison officer she wished it had lasted longer. After she died, the pair kissed each other over the body.

The killers made a mobile phone video of the murder scene, laughing and mocking their victim, and then dumped her body upside down in a garbage bin in a back shed.

A psychologist found Parashumti, who drank blood as part of a vampire subculture, had very strong sexual sadistic tendencies and was sexually aroused by physical torture and violence.

In court, the pair were seen laughing and smiling as the details of the murder were described.

Stacey's mother Sophie and father Andrew said: "We are all still devastated over our Stacey's brutal murder.

"We still can't believe that she has gone and the violent way her life ended.

"Though we have to accept the sentence the perpetrators have been given, no amount of time would ever be enough.

"Stacey was full of life, caring, loving, the life and soul of the house and will never fulfil any of her ambitions or dreams.
