Dan Gillespie Sells of The Feeling
photo: Virgin MediaOut gay Brit pop singer Dan Gillespie Sells has called on gay musicians to come out of the closet.
The Feeling frontman, who came out publicly in 2006, is urging other stars to follow in his footsteps and stop "living a lie".
He said, "The world would be a healthier place if people were more honest about their sexuality and the entertainment industry would be healthier if people were more honest.
"The more of us who come out, the easier it is for others. My advice for anyone considering coming out would be to do it for themselves. It's not fun living a lie."
He has also been open about having lesbian parents and a gay uncle.
In an attitude magazine article, Sells called his family a "kind of poster family for civil liberties organizations.
"The first time I discovered not everyone had two mums and a dad was when I went to school."
The famously well-dressed star has recently admitted having a boyfriend, although as yet he has not discussed who that might be.
They have been together since New Year's Eve 2007 he told Chart Rigger.
The Feeling were the most played band on UK radio in 2006 and Dan won the Stonewall Entertainer of the Year Award in 2007.
Sells fronts the group The Feeling, a band known for their smart dress and clipped English tones, and Dan says he doesn't even own anything remotely scruffy.
He said, " I didn't have space for clothes like that and never wore any of them. I do have one pair of comfy baggy things that I wear around the house, they're my old Taekwondo trousers, although I only ever did two classes.
"Otherwise, all the rest of my clothes are quite smart. I live across the road from a cheap booze shop, but even when I go across there I still get ridiculously dressed-up.
"People ask me why I've dressed up to buy cheap booze but I'm sorry, it's all I have got to wear now."
CNN this weekend took an uncommitted and mostly uninformative look at whether a out gay singer would ever have a chance on the Fox karaoke competition show American Idol.
clip hattip: Queerty who points out that long-ago (in Idol terms) ex-Idol-wannabe Jim Verraro, "wouldn’t even be on CNN if he didn’t do dudes."
