Commentary: Anti-war UK politician spews anti-gay Iranian propaganda

Source: Guardian's 'Comment is free'

by Peter Tatchell
[Peter Tatchell is a human rights campaigner, and a member of the queer rights group OutRage! and the left wing of the Green party. He is the Green Party's parliamentary candidate for Oxford East.]

George Galloway, the Leftwing member of Parliament from the Respect party, has been accused of making allegations that border on paedophile smears and play to homophobic prejudice. He claims that the boyfriend of gay Iranian asylum seeker Mehdi Kazemi was executed for "committing sex crimes against young men".

The insinuation of such a claim is that Mehdi's boyfriend was a rapist or a child sex abuser. It also stigmatises Mehdi with the shame that he was the partner of someone who committed sexual assaults on male youths. He will suffer with this stigma when he is returned to the UK and could face considerable personal hostility from people who have heard and believe these allegations against his boyfriend.

Mr Galloway made his astonishing allegation on Channel Five's The Wright Stuff. You can watch his interview here.

He has been asked to explain the source of his claim, but has so far failed to do so.

I am not aware of any paedophile-style sex abuse claims against Mehdi's partner. Moreover, no human rights group has mentioned any evidence that Mehdi's boyfriend was a rapist or a child molester.

Although the regime in Tehran frequently defames political, religious, ethnic and sexual dissidents with false claims of kidnapping, rape, alcoholism, sodomy, adultery, drug-taking and hooliganism, even the most extreme ayatollahs have not made allegations that Mehdi Kazemi's boyfriend was involved in sex abuse.

Nevertheless, Galloway has broadcast this very serious, potentially defamatory, allegation to the British public, and has then failed to back it up with evidence.

To some people, Galloway's claims look like propaganda in defence of the totalitarian, homophobic Islamic Republic of Iran. His passionate opposition to a war against Iran, which I share, seems to have clouded his judgement; leading him to downplay the regime's persecution of lesbians and gays, which includes state-sanctioned executions.

In the same interview for The Wright Stuff, Galloway went on to state: "All the [British] papers seem to imply that you get executed in Iran for being gay. That's not true."

His claim that lesbian and gay people are not at risk of execution in Iran is refuted by every reputable human rights organisation, including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission and the International Lesbian and Gay Association. None of these esteemed bodies are anti-Iran warmongers, as Galloway has subsequently seemed to imply.

The leftwing US journalist, Doug Ireland, has documented cases of the flogging and execution of men who have sex with men in Iran. These are just the cases we know about. It is likely that some similar executions never get media coverage in Iran and are therefore unknown to the outside world.

The Iranian Queer Rights Organisation also confirms that homosexuality is a capital offence and that gay Iranians are subjected to brutal punishments, including torture and hanging.

In a second interview on The Wright Stuff, Galloway launched into a scurrilous attack on Medhi's friends and supporters, and the defenders of lesbian, gay and bisexual human rights in Iran, including myself:

"This (Mehdi Kazemi's case) is a useful story for the war propaganda machine, the khaki machine now taking on a tinge of pink....what I will not accept is people being used, as Tatchell is, as the pink end of the war machine. That's what Peter Tatchell has become by attacking Iran in the way that he does."

At the antiwar protest in London on March 15, which I supported and attended, Galloway repeated these claims in his keynote speech. He said the "khaki war machine now has its pink contingent". He went on to imply that people who support gay rights in Iran are "useful idiots" and said their aim is to "bamboozle the public to go along with mass murder in Iran".

Galloway's insinuation that I am banging the war drum and siding with imperialism is both laughable and dishonourable.

For nearly 40 years I have supported the Iranian people's struggle against dictatorship, first against the western-backed Shah and, since 1979, against the clerical tyranny of the ayatollahs. I have been totally consistent. I am not suddenly focusing on Iran's human rights abuses and doing the dirty work of the Washington neocons, as Galloway seems to suggest.

Undeterred by criticisms that his outbursts collude with homophobia and with a viciously anti-gay regime in Tehran, Mr Galloway boasts: "I have an unblemished record of support for lesbian and gay equality."

Well, not quite. The Public Whip website (which monitors MPs votes) notes that Galloway did not vote on 8 out of 10 of the major parliamentary votes on gay law reform in recent years. His repeat absence is a strange way to express support for gay rights. Most other MPs turned up to vote. Why not George?

Galloway is, of course, a Respect MP. A commitment to gay rights was entirely absent from Respect's 2005 general election manifesto.

George Galloway was magnificent before the US Senate, exposing the Iraq debacle. Sadly, he now sometimes seems to be exonerating a cruel, unjust regime in Tehran that is responsible for some of the worst state-sanctioned homophobia in the world. This regime is also responsible for the equally heinous persecution of trade unionists, women's rights campaigners, student leaders, human rights advocates, investigative journalists and activists who defend Iran's subjugated minority nationalities, such as the Kurds, Arabs and Baluchis.

Misguided, untruthful attacks on Iranian gay people, the queer rights movement and the pink community do not strengthen the antiwar movement and the struggle against US imperialism. On the contrary, they play straight into the hands of the tyrants in Tehran and their mirror opposites in Washington. They betray all Iranians who are yearning and striving for democracy, human rights, social justice and the self-rule of Iran's oppressed minority nations.

Peter Tatchell is an anti Muslim propagandist who pose as pro Palestinian and pro Iranian and has introduced himself as part of Hands Off the People of Iran (HOPI) which is mainly a Trotskyite group based in Britain and is supported by mainly pro Zionists, either crypto Zionist or overt Zionist. Peter Tatchell has been called by others a Zionist anti Palestinian because he mainly goes to rallies spread propaganda against Muslims with false information to disturb demonstration which is held in support of either Palestinians or Lebanese who are brutalized by the apartheid state of Israel.HOPI’s slogan “No to Imperialist war, No to theocracy is a piece of rubbish which advocates attack by the Zionists and their supporters the imperialists on Iran. Peter Tatchell repeats the lies of two Iranian opposition groups, MEK, and the “Workers communist Party of Iran” which is working with HOPI and has been said is supported by Israel. The United States and Israel are in contact with this terrorist organization MEK,or the People’s Mojahedin of Iran, who assisted Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq war. The US and Israel consider this terrorist organization as an asset to be used against Iranian people although this organization’s name is on the state department list of terrorists.

    www.inminds.co.uk/article.php

Peter Tatchell is anti Muslim and anti Iranian government who is seeking regime change but he is silent against the genocide in Gaza and Lebanon.  He is not supporter of the Palestinian; he goes to rallies with its poster “gay rights” and fake picture against Iranian government in order to form anti Iran and anti Muslim opinion.  We have not seen him firmly stands against the Zionist regime in occupied Palestine and does not advocate regime change in Israel, instead he spreads false information to form negative public opinion against Iran to serve the Zionist agenda. He goes to Palestinian rally with provocative poster to disrupt their demonstration.

However, we have not seen him to go and demonstrate against the Kurdish terrorists who have been spying for Israel for the last 50 years and at the present are working hand in hand with Israelis and Americans are killing Iraqi people.  The Kurdish terrorists are receiving military training by Israel.  The aim of the Iraq war is to change the Middle East map and divide the neighboring countries into smaller pieces based on ethnic and religious divide to benefit Israel like what they are doing in Sudan to eliminate Israel’s enemy and secure oil for this apartheid state.  Israel needs oil and that’s why Israel has used its lobby in the US to divide Iraq and creates the tribe of Kurds as its ally.  Many Kurds and Arab Iranians are working with the enemy of the Iranian people, HOPI, to overthrow the Iranian government and divide Iran to create puppet states for Israel. In Kurdistan, Khuzestan, Balochestan, Peter Tatchell is working on behalf of so called “Ahwazi”:

    www.petertatchell.net/.../iranantiarabracism.htm

He writes on Iranian terrorists called themselves Ahwazi “

“The latest human rights abuses by Tehran are the secret, rigged trials and the imminent execution of six more ethnic Arab Iranians (Ahwazi Arabs) in Ahwaz, the provincial capital of Khuzestan in south-western Iran - homeland to five million Arabs.”

As I said earlier, this is an Israel and US/Britain plan to fund and give military training to Iranian Arabs, like Kurdish terrorists, to destabilize Iran for further partition.  The Kurdish Terrorists are working with American military forces; the former Saddam supporters and the puppet Maleki government who is under tremendous amount of Pressure to destroy Mahdi and his followers, an opposition group against the occupation of Iraq, who are being killed by the occupation forces including their spies, the Kurdish terrorists. Not only Peter Tatchell and HOPI do nothing against the occupation but they are working hand in hand with many Kurds who want the occupation forces stay in Iraq indefinitely.  HOPI is very much against anything Islamic, including Hezbollah Hammas and Iranian government, exactly like the Zionists, and attacks those who support Human rights of Lebanese Hezbollah against Zionists in Israel.  HOPI and Tatchell are silent against the crime of the Kurdish terrorists because they are the puppet of Israel and north of Iraq is a spy network for Israel and Americans and the West.  That’s why Tatchell and HOPI are silent against the stoning of a Kurdish young woman who was in love with a young man whose religion was not the same as hers:

    www.dailymail.co.uk/.../worldnews.html

But they make fake photos of stoning in Iran to form negative public opinion against Iran:

“In rally posters showing photos of a stoning which the organizers claimed to occur in Iran. The photos were fake - they were taken straight out of a fictional Dutch movie (De Steen (1994), Director: Mahnaz Tamizi, actress being stoned: Smadar Monsinos.”

And Peter Tatchell was involved in spreading false information against Iran:

“..and Peter Tatchell (as leader of the gay-rights group "OutRage!") have previously championed their case claiming they were kids who were executed in Iran for being "gay" and "in love". Well it turns out their claims were far from the truth. Investigations by Amnesty, Human Right Watch and the International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission revealed that the pair, who was not kids - at least one of them was 19, had in fact abducted a young 13 year old boy, then raped him at knifepoint and when they finished with him they went on to steal his bicycle. After speaking with the victim’s father there was no doubt that Tatchell’s claims were false - it was later revealed that the story was planted by the MEK, the terrorist Iranian organization.

    www.monthlyreview.org/.../pourzal220507.html

I agree with George Galloway on Mehdi Kazemi and his case. I have to add many young Iranians in order to get Permission to stay, they fabricate information.  The West has forced illegal economic sanctions on Iran and has created poverty to destabilize Iranian society for regime change.  This policy of imperialism and Zionism and their supporters is illegal and is considered war crimes.  They killed over a million, many children in Iraq by economic sanction to weaken Iraq for further attack. To me it is strange that Mehdi Kazemi’s father discusses his son sex partner’s fate with him over the phone openly.  Furthermore, Peter Tatchell and others who claim gays are executed in Iran because they are gay is a LIE.

Iran has thousand of homosexuals of both sexes who are not living openly as gays. Ahmadinezad was right when he said:  “We don’t have gays like you do.”  He did not deny homosexuality in Iran; rather he implied Iran’s gays don’t live openly as gays. Gays in Iran are still in closet like your gays 25 years ago.

Please do your own research and do not believe whatever Tatchell is telling you.  He has an agenda.  His agenda is to overthrow the Iranian government for the benefits of the Zionists.  Instead, he should seek end to occupation in Iraq, Palestine and end the phony “war on terror.”

He should be using his energy to change the behavior of the axis of evil, US – Israel – Britain.  The west is killing and robbing other countries for the past 500 years. Enough is enough.  We do not trust the west with its organizations associated with “human rights” because majorities are connected to the intelligent services.  Please read Michael Barker’s papers on Soro’s human right the “Human Rights Watch”,  “National Endowment for Democracy”, Freedom House” and many more with their organizer as NGO who are involved in information gathering and directing societies towards destabilization and “velvet revolution.”

Well, that's not the way it works here.

Although we usually stick to digests of news stories, we do occasionally print clearly labeled commentary like this piece by Tatchell. We pick up commentary like this when it's clearly related to a single issue: gay rights. Especially when it also relates to a story that we've digested in prior posts.

We do not and will not delve into the complex myriad of issues with which activists like Tatchell concern themselves.

We sincerely welcome comments like yours that expand on the complex web of necessarily interrelated issues, but we'll continue to ignore most of that web in the stories posted to Qnews.

Significant evidence -- including Ahmadinezad's bizarre speech at Columbia -- seems to have been collected that Iran is not a good place to be gay. Is it such a bad place that countries should grant asylum to gay folk that make it to their shores? I'm not sure. But I figure it's far better for UK or Canada or the US to err on the side of caution -- something they don't seem to be doing in some of these cases.

I don't believe much of what Tatchell says much of the time, but I figure that he says it cogently enough that I'll occasionally repost one or two of his screeds here because I admire his passion even when I find his analysis lacking.
