Montreal gay bar settles bias complaint by woman it kicked out; Can't exclude women

MONTREAL -- A Montreal gay bar that caters to male clients has settled a discrimination complaint by a woman who was thrown out of the premises.
Audrey Vachon, 21, filed a complaint to Quebec's human rights commission last May after she was asked to leave Bar Le Stud because she is a woman. She was sitting at the bar with her father, Gilles Vachon, Montreal Gazette reports.
In a statement released today, the human rights commission announced the settlement, but refused to provide specific details.
The bar and Vachon agreed to keep the terms of the settlement confidential, reports Canadian Press.
Commission spokesperson Robert Sylvestre, however, said the bar must respect the charter of rights, which means it has no right to refuse people entry because of their gender or sexual preference.
The commission says businesses have the right to attract a particular clientele but not to discriminate by excluding other customers.
When the suit was filed, according to Canadian Press, Le Stud owner Michel Gadoury said women had been banned most nights since the bar opened 11 years ago.
