Inquest: Popular Brit gay DJ died of 'misadventure' after drug cocktail and bondage sex

Source: Hounslow Guardian, Press Association, PinkNews.com, SkyNews
Kevin Greening, a popular morning DJ on England's Radio One network, died after taking a cocktail of cocaine, ecstasy, and GHB, which was followed by a bondage sex session involving a sling, mask, gaffer tape and cling film, an inquest heard yesterday.

The inquest concluded today that his death was "misadventure," PinkNews reports.

In testimony before a coroner's court, Greening's boyfriend Sean Griffin broke down briefly as he gave evidence of the events leading up to his partner's death on Saturday, December 29 last year.

Griffin, who was originally arrested for murder but was only facing a police caution for intending to supply class A and C drugs, testified yesterday to the inquest panel about the pair's last night together.

At Westminster Coroner's Court, he twice reiterated the pair had a loving relationship and said drug taking and sexual games were not unusual.

Griffin, a civil servant, said: "We had done this on previous occasions, we had an active and loving relationship. Sexually it was perhaps a relationship that would not be regarded as normal but it was vigorous and imaginative and we enjoyed each other very much. But it was a catastrophic night."

The coroner, Dr Paul Knapman told the court, "I regret it is necessary to hear evidence of behaviour many in life find unusual and deviant.

"But nevertheless it does seem that this death occurred by consenting adults in private."

Knapman recorded a verdict of misadventure after the 44-year-old was found dead by police at a flat in Wandsworth, south London, on December 29, the eve of his 45th birthday.

Knapman wrote that Greening was "Found dead having indulged in unorthodox sexual behaviour involving restraining equipment and illegal drugs.

"I say this is a case of misadventure. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends," Knapman said.

Griffin testified that the pair arrived home about 5am After a night at a club. After sleeping and taking more drugs the pair embarked on a bondage session, Griffin testified.

Greening had been in a black leather sling attached to scaffolding in the bedroom of his Griffin's flat before he died in December.

When Griffin noticed his partner appeared to be tired, he said that he let him down from the sling, but wasn't concerned about his health.

The pair then went to sleep. Griffin said woke to find his partner "pallid".

At the time, Mr Greening was still wearing a rubber suit and still had cling film and "gaffer tape" wrapped around his torso.

Knapman described photos of Mr Griffin's bedroom, which showed masks, leather boots and straps, cuffs and gaffer tape, all used in the session.

He said: "I dragged him into the living room where the lights are better to see if there was any movement in his chest."

Police and ambulance crew found Mr Greening in the living room when they arrived.

After his death last year, tributes were paid across the radio industry.

BBC Radio 5 Live's Simon Mayo said, "I only got to know him when he joined Radio 1 but it was quite clear that he was a fantastically bright individual. He had a great brain.

"He had a very, very dry sense of humour and he was quite shy really, sometimes embarrassed about having achieved the level of fame that he did have.

"Anyone who listened to his programmes could tell he was extremely bright, extremely clever."
