A teacher at an exclusive private school in the pricey seaside Sydney suburb of Manly resigned after students found a profile he had posted on a gay hookup service.
How did the students find the profile? The Manly Daily (of course) reports that while his computer screen was being projected for his students to see, the teacher used what students thought was an "odd" username to get onto an educational website.
The students then searched for the username on Google and turned up a link to the teacher's profile on a gay hookup website. The profile included nude pictures of the teacher who described himself as "40-year-old cuddly bear".
Word (and links) spread among students at the school. Quickly.
The school's principal, Russell Morgan, said the administration became aware of the matter on Friday when a student alerted them to the material. He said the teacher had admitted responsibility for the images contained on his profile on the website and had resigned yesterday morning.
"The teacher in question has resigned. Our investigation found that he had crossed the line of his personal life with school life," the principal said.
Morgan said the teacher had taken the correct action by immediately resigning and the school would move on.
"There are not any child protection matters involved," Morgan said. "He has not done anything illegal. In fact, we would not have even been aware had it not been stumbled across."
The father of a student who had gone through the effort to log onto the area of the website where the pictures were posted expressed shock at what he saw. "I was just disgusted and shocked at the photos," the father told Manly Daily.
He helpfully described what he had seen on the website: "In the photos he is completely naked, holding his genitals. There is a lot of anger among the parents you work your guts out to send your kids to an elite private school and you don't expect this.''
But the mother of a boy at the school figured out the real lesson from the matter: "He is a teacher and he needs to keep his private life private," she said. "He should not have been using the same name in his professional capacity in front of children."
