Lesbian couple says a "peck" got them kicked out of Seattle baseball park

Source: KOMO4 TV , Seattle Post Intelligencer blog , The Stranger's SLOG Sirbrina Guerrero Photo via KOMO TV SEATTLE -- A local lesbian couple says a peck on the lips nearly got the two of them tossed out of a Mariners game. The women said they were singled out by a security guard simply because they kissed each other. Sirbrina Guerrero says she only gave her date a peck, but a mother sitting with her son complained to security and, as a result, they were told to stop or leave. "And he (the guest services agent) goes 'there's a lady whose son says he saw you guys making out, and...

Football player's legacy - hidden because he was gay - is restored

Source: MetroPulse , New York Times KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Nobody who knows the area's football history disputes the accomplishments of Jackie Walker, a local high school football star and pioneering all-American linebacker at Tennessee from 1969 through ’71. At Fulton High School here, he averaged 23 tackles a game his senior season. He went on to become the first African-American football player in the Southeastern Conference to be named an all-American and the first to captain an SEC team. And almost four decades after his college career ended, and six years after his death, Walker remains...

Sheryl Swoopes tells (again) her story as one of few out gay athletes

Source: Seattle Post-Intelligencer Sheryl Swoopes Seattle Storm photo For a long time, too long, Sheryl Swoopes kept her secret, and then it got to be overwhelming," writes Seattle Post-Intelligencer sports columnist Jim Moore. But then he gets to tell an inspiring story about an athlete -- something that sports writers do every day, but this the kind of story that too few sports writers have the opportunity to pen. "In late October of 2005, the WNBA's best player broke the news to ESPN The Magazine , admitting she was gay." As Moore points out, that's hardly the most significant...

'Soccer no place for gays' says disgraced former official

Source: AFP via News24.com In what AFP describes as a "bizarre interview" the disgraced former manager of an Italian soccer team has hit out against gay players in the European league. "A homosexual cannot do the job of a footballer," former Juventus managing director Luciano Moggi said during a Monday television interview. "The football world is not designed for them, it's a special atmosphere, one in which you stand naked under the showers." Moggi is being tried for a variety of corruption offences during his time in charge of the Turin team that's usually...

Gay fans hope to tone down homophobic chants at Rangers games

Source: New York Times During the final 10 minutes of many Rangers home games, the spotlights focus on Section 407 as Larry Goodman, a longtime season-ticket holder, pumps up the crowd with a goofy dance. Kevin Jennings said he stopped attending Rangers games for a month because of homophobic epithets shouted at players. As Goodman’s routine is broadcast on the giant monitors above the ice, a familiar chant picks up momentum. “Ho-mo Lar-ry!” the crowd shouts. “Ho-mo Lar-ry!” The chant is one example of what several gay hockey fans describe as a toxic atmosphere during Rangers games and that Madison...

Aspen panel to tackle issues of gay men in pro sports

Source: Aspen Times ASPEN, Colo. -- Sports Illustrated asked athletes in the four major professional leagues in March 2006 whether they would welcome an openly gay teammate. The results of the anonymous surveys concluded that a majority of players wouldn’t take issue with a homosexual teammate in the locker room. The National Hockey League had the highest positive response, at 79.9 percent. On the other end of the spectrum, the NFL had the smallest majority, at 56.9 percent. Two years later, there’s an obvious follow-up question: If there’s seemingly a majority of support for homosexual athletes...

Rugby hunk Ben Cohen is more than just a gay icon

Source: The Guardian [images from any of many blogs that post pics from ben-cohen.com ] At least Ben Cohen has not been forgotten. Apparently there were more than 46,000 hits on his website last month following the release of the exiled England wing's new beefcake calendar and he has bowed further to popular demand by doing a photo-shoot for Gay Times. A large chunk of his fan-base clearly cares little what he does on Saturdays as long as he is bare-chested in glossy colour every month. The positive attention makes a change. Cohen does not enjoy the uncritical adoration of everyone within the...

Commentary: Settle down, Phil Jackson's joke was funny

Source: Outsports.com By Cyd Zeigler jr. In the latest example that the collective "gay community" has completely lost its sense of humor, Lakers coach Phil Jackson is being called on the carpet for an hysterical comment he made after his team got beaten by the San Antonio Spurs, 107-92. The Spurs had hit 13 three-pointers, and Jackson was asked if the Spurs' penetration was leading to their open outside shots. Jackson replied: "We call this a Brokeback Mountain game, because there's so much penetration and kickouts." I don’t know about the kickouts part, but it’s funny...

Source: Associated Press via CBS2 HOUSTON (AP) Coach Phil Jackson said he deserved the reprimand he got from the NBA on Wednesday for making a sexual reference in a comment following the Los Angeles Lakers' loss in San Antonio. The Spurs made 13 3-pointers in their 107-92 victory on Tuesday night, and Jackson was asked if too much penetration was leading to open outside shooters. "We call this a 'Brokeback Mountain' game, because there's so much penetration and kickouts," Jackson said. "It was one of those games." The 2005 film, which won three Oscars, depicts...

Navratilova: Easier now, but it's still tough for pro athletes to come out

Source: Washington Blade At a time when gay athletes wait until their playing careers are long over before coming out -- and even then only when they have a book to hawk -- Martina Navratilova still stands out as a remarkable figure, 26 years after publicly acknowledging she is a lesbian. She endured boos from crowds, lost untold millions in endorsement deals and watched former fans sit on their hands as she walked onto the court. This week, Navratilova comes to D.C. to accept the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce/American Airlines Extra Mile Award at the chamber’s fifth annual national...
