Source: Indianapolis Star About 300 Hoosiers rallied at the Statehouse on Monday to urge the defeat of a proposed constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and to call for passage of legislation protecting gays from job discrimination and from hate crimes. Sam Huber, an Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis student who spoke at the rally, said that "everyone thinks of the American dream -- a family, possibly with kids. My partner and I think of that, too." "Wouldn't it be nice if all of us could have that dream?" she said. Rep. Gregory W. Porter, D-Indianapolis...

Source: Indianapolis Star A constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages appears dead for this legislative session. The amendment passed the Senate and was assigned to the House Rules committee, but its chairman, Scott Pelath, said he does not intend to give the bill a hearing. Pelath, D-Michigan City, said his committee voted against passing the amendment last year and didn't see any need to take up the issue again. If Pelath's committee does not hear the measure, the effort to amend the constitution would have to start anew. To amend the constitution, two consecutively-elected...

Source: Indianapolis Star A proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriages in Indiana likely was dealt a fatal blow Friday when a key lawmaker said he would not give the issue a hearing. Rep. Scott Pelath, D-Michigan City, who is chairman of the House Rules and Legislative Procedure Committee, said Friday that the most urgent issue facing the state is property taxes, not same-sex marriage, which already is banned by Indiana law. “I’m not planning on having a hearing,” Pelath said. “The short session (of the legislature) was designed to deal with emergencies. We have a very serious...

Source: Associated Press via CNBC INDIANAPOLIS (AP) An effort to amend the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage faces a pivotal hurdle in the General Assembly this year, but whether it advances could hinge on the willingness of House leaders to take it up in a session in which property taxes are the top priority. Sen. Brandt Hershman, who has helped the proposal pass the Senate three times, has again filed a resolution calling for the amendment. But Hershman said the House should take up the issue first. Rep. Eric Turner, a Republican from Gas City, plans to file the proposal in the House...

Source: Indianapolis Star Support among Hoosiers for a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage appears to be on the decline, according to an Indianapolis Star-WTHR (Channel 13) poll. The poll, based on the responses of 600 people statewide, found that 49 percent of Hoosiers supported the amendment. That number is down from 56 percent in a March 2005 survey by The Star. Of the respondents, 44 percent said they opposed a constitutional ban, up from 40 percent in 2005. Earlier this year, the Indiana Senate passed the constitutional ban, but the amendment was voted down in a House...
