Source: Clovis News Journal , Clovis News Journal , KOB-TV , Associated Press via News9West CLOVIS, N.M.-- Administrators of the school district here promise to give students at the local high school a lesson in official censorship next year. They say administrators will exert greater control over next year's high school yearbook after student editors of the publication included photographs of two lesbian couples in this year's edition. The pictures that caused the big stir show two lesbian couples along with nine straight couples in a feature on relationships. Student editor in chief Maggie...

Domestic partnerships and health care reform lose momentum in New Mexico legislature

Source: Albuquerque Tribune SANTA FE (AP) The Legislature virtually killed one of Gov. Bill Richardson's highest priorities for the legislative session and made scant progress on another. On Saturday, a Senate committee shelved one of Richardson's top initiatives, which would allow for domestic partnerships. The move likely dooms the measure this session. Richardson's support wasn't enough to overcome opposition from social conservatives who worry the measure is similar to recognizing gay marriage. The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 6-4 to table the legislation. Two Democrats...

N.M. legislators expect to quickly tackle partnership bill

Source: Albuquerque Tribune SANTA FE -- Gov. Bill Richardson's assignment for the Legislature is to solve a problem that has vexed the state for decades: extending health coverage to uninsured New Mexicans. If that political backdrop isn't large enough, there's the looming election year in which the state's three U.S. House members decided to run for the Senate and leave their congressional seats open for challengers. One political...

According to Montaño and police reports, a vandal or vandals struck vehicles in the Casa Solano neighborhood, on Camino de las Crucitas, on Herradura Road and at Rainbow Vision off Rodeo Road, a retirement community that focuses on the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. Police believe the spray-paintings are linked because of similarities including the type...

Source: Associated Press via Dallas Voice FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) The beating of a man in Farmington in September is being prosecuted as a hate crime. The district attorney’s office filed notices in cases against Scott Thompson, 21, of Aztec; Jerry Paul, 40, of Shiprock; and Craig Yazzie, 37, of Dennehotso, Ariz., that it will seek a hate crime sentencing enhancement on charges initially filed in October. That could mean an additional year of prison time for each felony conviction. “It was a gay-bashing kind of deal — that’s the way it reads to me,” Deputy District Attorney Brent Capshaw said. Matthew...
