Source: Oregonian , PolitickerOR.com Oregon's Sen. Gordon Smith issued a strong apology today in two forums for confusing remarks he made last week that some interpreted as a defense of polygamy and others took as equating polygamy with same-sex marriage. [video at end of this post] Smith apologized in an interview with The Oregonian and wrote in an email to a political blog, saying, "I am sorry if I offended any of my friends in the gay community with this reference." He was backing off from remarks he made last week during a panel discussion at the Center for American Progress....

Stephen Marc Beaudoin reports for Just Out that David Crowe of Concerned Oregonians told supporters in a June 10 email that "too little time remains to collect the required signatures" for the petitions. One of laws Crowe hoped to overturn creates legal domestic...

Source: Oregonian , Court decision , Statesman Journal Oregon's second-highest court today upheld a 2004 ballot measure that limits marriage to heterosexual couples. The Oregon Court of Appeals ruled a week after the California Supreme Court struck down that state's ban on same-sex marriage as unconstitutionally discriminatory. Like California, Oregon has a domestic partnership law that grants virtually all the rights of marriage to registered partners, but does not use the term "marriage." Today's narrow decision does not affect that law. The marriage equality advocates that...

Running on an oft-used slogan of "get it done," city commissioner Adams defeated 12 other candidates Tuesday to assume the top office in the city and one of the most visible bully pulpits in the Pacific Northwest, reports The Oregonian in what may most aptly be described as a glowing tribute to the 44-year-old mayor elect...

The first step toward election of the out gay commissioner will come two weeks from now when votes in the state's mail-only primary are counted. Source: Oregonian Following on a Washington Post report about the notorious McCain temper, Oregonian columnist Jeff Mapes reflects today on a display of he saw over a decade ago when the Arizona senator was invited to speak to one of Oregon's most notorious anti-gay groups. The columnist also includes a clip from a story he wrote about the appearance in 1993 that includes this: The Republican senator, under fire from gay activists back home for aiding the OCA, never directly addressed the group's sponsorship of several anti-gay-rights ballot measures. But McCain made it clear that, while...

Source: Willamette Week , Advocate Yes, Chelsea Clinton made it to Portland's infamous "Red Dress" Party. Not to be confused with that other annual "Red Dress" fundraiser, this is the " Red Dress Party ," a mondo-alcohol-fueled dance party where nearly 2,000 gay men in various states of red dress undress (and several nearly naked straight men as well as one very colorfully decorated naked woman) invade a warehouse in Northeast Portland and dance their collective asses off to pounding disco music and the incredible Storm Large and her Balls. Between giving speeches...

Source: Salem Statesman-Journal by Todd Simmons Oregon voters may well face two issues this fall that many people probably think were resolved some time ago: the state's new anti-discrimination and domestic-partner laws. Although some are trying to characterize those potential ballot measures as solely "moral issues," both undoubtedly have economic implications that voters would be well advised to consider. First, a little background. During its 2007 session, the Oregon Legislature passed both pieces of legislation with relative ease and Gov. Ted Kulongoski quickly signed both into...

Source: Oregonian Years after Bill Stein came out to friends and colleagues, he moved near family in Portland and went back into hiding. If a resident of his westside retirement home makes an anti-gay slur, Stein, 86, says nothing. "I'm, by nature, chicken," the retired anthropology professor said. " If you don't say, 'I'm gay,' you pass. I'm pretty well closeted." On Valentine's Day, Stein drove to the conservative side of Multnomah County to visit Rainbow Vista in Gresham, one of the first retirement homes in the nation marketed to gay seniors....

Source: Ashland Daily Tidings Oregon partnerships We feel more sadness than outrage at the news that several Oregon Republican legislators have filed initiative measures to repeal basic civil liberties granted to gay and lesbian couples in this state. Sad because we know this means the state is in for yet another of the divisive and nasty campaigns that have torn us apart over the past decade and a half. Sad because we see no reason to overturn measures that harm no one while providing human dignities to tens of thousands of Oregonians. Sad because a Jackson County legislator, Sal Esquivel, is...

The supporters of the repeal have until July 3 to collect 83,000 signatures to put their petition on the November ballot, according to gay rights group Basic Rights Oregon. Source: Willamette Week Does Judge Michael Mosman hate gays? The question came up Friday when the U.S. District Court judge in Oregon issued a temporary injunction against HB 2007 , the law providing domestic partnership rights and benefits to gays and lesbians. It was to have gone into effect Wednesday, Jan. 2, but will now have to await the outcome of another hearing Feb. 1. This isn’t the first time that Mosman’s name has come up around the issue of gay rights. Source: Associated Press and Oregonian PORTLAND, Ore. -- A federal judge on Friday placed on hold a state domestic partnership law that was set to take effect Jan. 1, pending a February hearing. Source: Crosscut by Knute Berger The state of Indiana has just apologized for passing the first modern eugenics law in 1907. Indiana was the leader of the progressive pack in adopting measures to sterilize, without consent, poor, mentally disabled, and so-called "undesirable" citizens in the name of improving humanity's breeding stock. We're generally horrified by that idea now -- especially following the full application of eugenics practices by the Nazis -- but in the early 20th century, the idea not only had mainstream support, including the endorsement of the U.S. Supreme...
