Source: Richmond Times-Union , Northern Virginia Daily , Associated Press Richmond, VA -- A Virginia Supreme Court ruling this morning means a Vermont child custody order in a failed civil union must be enforced here even though same-sex marriages are barred in Virginia, but the right-wing lawyers who lost today's case vowed to continue the legal fight. The unusual, long-running case centers on 6-year-old Isabella, born to then Lisa Miller-Jenkins, after she was artificially inseminated. Miller-Jenkins had entered into a civil union in Vermont with Janet Miller-Jenkins in 2001. The union broke...

Source: Virginian-Pilot via Pantagraph PORTSMOUTH, Va. -- Bethany Laccone can attend I.C. Norcom High School wearing a T-shirt that depicts a lesbian pride symbol, Principal Lynn Briley said Friday. Briley’s announcement came a day after the American Civil Liberties Union demanded that Norcom officials apologize to the 17-year-old student after a teacher and an assistant principal there reportedly made her cover up the shirt and requested she not wear it to school. The organization also requested, among other things, that officials not participate in other such “censorship” and remove any disciplinary...

"When my teacher told me she wanted me to turn my shirt inside-out or cover it up, I was confused, because I've worn that shirt to school several times before and nobody ever said a word about it,"...

After 11 years, Virginia decides man can't be 'poofter' -- at least not on his car tags

Source: Washington Post For 11 years, over nearly 200,000 miles, with the blessing of the state of Virginia, David Phillips has driven his Tracker with the "POOFTER" license plate, and nobody has complained -- not even when he parked at the British Embassy, where everybody knows "poofter" is British slang for a gay man. "It's always a rolling good laugh for them," says Phillips, who is gay and chose his tags' message because "it's just an amusing word that I self-identify with." The commonwealth of Virginia is not amused. It gave Phillips his...
