A few todo notes:
Now that I'm more comfortable with the way the master pages / subpages work on asp.net and CS, I realize that my current column format is a bit too constraining for the future. I'll redefine the master.Master to give a choice of three column configurations for subpages. I think I'll stick with the current config only for the home page.
On blog post and list pages, I'll set up an option in the master for a narrower center column with a right column wide enough to fit both a Google skyscraper (120px) and links to the blog's content like "Recent posts".
I should also set up an option for a wide center column that would ignore the right-side column altogether.
Putting the choices into the master.Master should give more latitude for subpages.
While I'm at it, I should (as much as I hate to do it) 'rubberize' the center column to let it expand or contract at least a little bit for different view widths. (Yes, I still hate rubber layouts, but I'm willing to compromize here on a slight rubbery-ness to that one column.
First, though, I'll deal with the news page by building the post trap that I mentioned earlier to pick up the source url from the first line of the post content and add it as an extended property. Once that's working, I can modify the various list and post pages that pick up the content to better reflect their source. The front-page link on the news digest would then go into the full digest locally, and only then out to the source url.
I'd also like to offer a "Quick read" link similar to what Huffington Post has. This should be easier than I thought it would be because the existing CS modal windows can be customized for the purpose.
Another note about that: It might become more important because it's starting to look like there's little real chance (although I continue to hope) that there will be others contributing to Qblog. If that's the case, and it becomes just a continuation of what it's been at blog.ttca.org, then I should up the ante on Qnews by adding original content to each of the stories. That will slow down the process of creating the digest, but will give the site far more 'meat' from the get-go.
The built-in 'Excerpt' feature on CS blogging can be used on the news page to give each story (or, at least, most of them) a unique perspective which gives the search engines something to feed on, which gives... and on and on in the slow slog (as it were, ahem...) of making something that someone else will actually ready.
But -- before any of that -- I vowed (to myself, of course -- making it so much easier to forgive if I break the vow) to get those damn Cruise pictures up this weekend. Just a few more to go, and then the hassle of arranging the huge mass.
